I was a bit worried after reading the reviews that the cards would be “flimsy” but they are sturdier than some of the more expensive flash cards I have purchased. I bought the shapes/colors, numbers and letters for my 2 year old. The shapes/colors are very basic and my daughter already knows them so they bore her quickly. I was hoping for a larger variety of shapes. It only includes squares, circles, rectangles and ovals. We did come up with some fun sorting games to play (for example – put all the green in one pile or put all the squares here) with the cards so she enjoys playing those types of games. Overall for the cost I am satisfied.

I read this book to my kids who really have enjoyed learning and recognizing the animals. They have fun making the animal sounds as we read.

Because the book has few words, even a non-Spanish speaker can get through it with the kids.

I think in an attempt to rhyme, the translators have put a little silliness into the book. At times the animals say things that don’t really make sense. But to me, it’s a minor issue.

All in all, my children have really enjoyed the animal sounds and cute illustrations.

This is one of the most outstanding espionage novels ever written. Small wonder it was a best seller in 1942. Helen MacInnes was unrivaled in her ability to put fictional characters and a exciting plot into current world events and political tensions, all woven into actual geographical backgrounds. Richard and Frances Myles are so life-like that you feel like you are there with them throughout their harrowing experiences in pre-war Europe. All of her novels were written in this fashion, but this is one of her best. I first read it in high school, and recently I pulled it out and read it again. And it was as exciting and entertaining as it was all those years ago. A great way to spend a quiet evening.

This book would not be my favorite choice of reading materials. But children love to read funny books like this. Most children can identify with these events in this book because they have endured similiar situations at home, maybe not as bad as this book tells about, but some older sibling who tells them what to do. Children want to read about things that could happen to them and identify with stories that tell about having older siblings who seem to pick on them from time to time.

If you have a struggling reader or a reluctant reader, I recommend this book to them. After all, this is a book that will encourage reading. Reading skills are developed by reading. This book has pictures and fewer words on the pages than a chapter book without pictures. So it’s a good place to start, then as reading skills build, the student can move on to harder texts. Students must be engaged in reading to become a better reader. This book is probably also a good stress reliever for children who feel stressed at school. This is one of the most checked out books in our media center at school.

My Name Is Georgia: A Portrait by Jeanette Winter Overview

From the time she was just a young girl, Georgia O’Keeffe viewed the world in her own way. While other girls played with toys and braided their hair, Georgia practiced her drawing and let her hair fly free. As an adult, Georgia followed her love of art from the steel canyons of New York City to the vast plains of New Mexico. There she painted all day, and slept beneath the stars at night. Throughout her life Georgia O’Keeffe followed her dreams–and so found her way to become a great American artist.

Georgia O’Keeffe was always different…”I did things other people don’t do.” She didn’t dress like the other young girls, or wear her hair in braids, and she was content to be alone…”I was satisfied to be all by myself.” From an early age knew she wanted to be an artist…”Maybe I could make something beautiful…” Jeanette Winter takes us on the journey of Georgia O’Keeffe’s remarkable life, from her birth in Wisconsin in 1887, to art school in Chicago and New York, and then on to her years of painting in Texas, New York City, and finally the New Mexican desert. Her simple, spare prose, complete with quotations from Georgia’s own writings, is engaging, and complemented by charming and evocative illustrations that enhance the story. Georgia O’Keeffe loved the sky, sunset, red hills, flowers, and bones, and she painted the world around her BIG, so that people would see it the way she did. Perfect for kids 6-10, My Name Is Georgia is a lovely introductory biography that will whet the appetite of young art lovers everywhere, and brings home the important message…Never be afraid to follow your dream.

Anne’s House of Dreams is the fifth book in L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series. The book begins with Anne and Gilbert’s wedding at Green Gables, and chronicles the first few years of their lives together through happiness and hardship.

Despite the fact that Anne and Gilbert finally seem to get their happy ending in Anne’s House of Dreams, some of the magic of the earlier books is lost in this novel. I can’t really put my finger on any one thing and say, “that’s it – that’s where it went wrong,” but something is definitely missing.

Anne, of course, is still Anne – a young woman with a enviable zest for life, who seems to touch the lives of everyone around her – but one thing has changed: she’s forsaken her creative dreams for a set of different dreams. It was a switch from the Anne I’ve come to know and love, and I didn’t really care for it. Montgomery has also created another fabulously eccentric cast of characters, but they don’t seem as well-drawn as past characters.

Thankfully Montgomery’s writing is still beautiful. She was a master of descriptive and lyrical fiction:
“The garret was a shadowy, suggestive, delightful place, as all garrets should be. Through the open window, by which Anne sat, blew the sweet, scented, sun-warm air of the August afternoon; outside, poplar boughs rustled and tossed in the wind; beyond them were the woods, where Lover’s Lane wound it’s enchanted path, and the old apple orchard, which still bore it’s rosy harvests munificently.” Can’t you just picture it? The one thing that remains wonderful about this series is Montgomery’s wonderful style of writing.

Although it is not my favorite, Anne’s House of Dreams is still worth reading. This novel has lost a little of the “feel” of the earlier books, but still makes a good addition to Anne’s story.
